Cape Washington with part of the Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) rookery, Ross Sea, Antarctica. Most of these penguins (a colony of 300,000) have never seen a human before and they are quite fearless. Adult Emperor Penguins stand at about 1 metre tall and are the largest penguins. The males brood the eggs on their feet during the winter standing on the fast ice in tight groups for warmth. They shuffle from the outside of the group to the inside to share the load. When the chicks are hatching the females return with food. The males then head off to feed and return about 3 weeks later. During the spring the chicks get a feed every 2 to 3 weeks. Parents and chicks recognise each other by their calls. Once the chick starts to fledge the parents do not feed it again and return to the sea until the next breeding season. By late December - early January all the chicks have left the ice for life in the ocean.
