The Esperanza plant is one of the most commonly found plants in the South Texas Coastal Bend area and one of the favorites of the Ruby Throated Hummingbirds that appear in the thousands in the Rockport-Fulton area of the Texas Coast. These little birds stop over in this area before making their big journey across the Gulf of Mexico, feeding voraciously before their big flight.
This drawing is pen and ink with watercolor pencil featuring a pair of little Ruby's feeding on the Esperanza flowers. The male hummer with his red throat patch on the top right and the female on the lower left.
This work was done especially for the 2015 Rockport-Fulton Hummer Bird Festival. I originally intended it to be a black and white pen and ink version designed especially to color. It was used in the festival as part of a coloring package just for children to learn to color hummingbirds. This is the completed and colored with watercolor pencil version.

Drawing and painting animals has always been my favorite choice in art and have been drawing since I was old enough to pick up a crayon. Art is part of what I do, not just something to do. I hold a degree in Commercial Art, worked in graphic and commercial art for several years, and studied Studio Art at the University of California, Riverside. My favorite subjects are animals, especially wild animals and birds. I have recently completed several hummingbird works and have been lucky enough to have my work selected for the Rockport-Fulton Hummer Bird Festival T-Shirt Art contest for 2014 and 2015.
