Description
In our neighborhood, Starlings travel in flocks in the hundreds. Still, they are dazzling birds when you get a good look at them. When such a group swoops down on our feeding station their aggressive behavior scares away our regular birds and they’ll eat everything in and around the feeder. They have an omnivorous food habit, feeding on earthworms, centipedes, spiders, seeds, berries, plums, pears, cherries, and apples.
They have entertaining personalities too and apparently also care about their hygene as they surely demonstrate in this image. Starlings are great vocal mimics. Individuals can learn the calls of up to 20 different species. Birds whose songs starlings often copy include the Eastern Wood-Pewee, Killdeer, meadowlarks, Northern Bobwhite, Wood Thrush, Red-tailed Hawk, American Robin, Northern Flicker, and many others.
