Artist's Description

Fayette State Park in Michigan's upper peninsula along the shores of Lake Michigan was one of the largest iron smelting locations during the 1870s and 1880s. With its large hotel, It was also a resort destination for people to get away from the city and do some boating, hunting and fishing. The population at its peak was about 500. Iron workers would make about one dollar a day from which they tried to put some money away for when there was a furnace shut down, or for the harsh winter months. When the smelting operation shut down in 1891, some people stayed in the town, including commercial fishermen. The hotel operated well into the 20th century and in 1959, the state acquired the land and turned it into a state park. Restoration of the village buildings continues.

About Mary Bedy

I have been working in the translation industry for over 30 years, but my first love is art and photography. When I found 25 years ago I no longer had time to paint, I turned to photography for my artistic outlet. I have eclectic taste and find a lot of things attractive or interesting - architecture, landscape, light play, color and black and white. From the simple, minimal image, to the complex patterns of nature, I've tried to include something for everyone. I have been honored by having my photo "Fort Michilimackinac Exterior Guard Tower" chosen for the cover of Michigan History Magazine. It appears on the front of their November/December issue, 2015. Please browse often, as I add new work on a regular basis.
