Since the earlier times of cattle drives, sugar cane, logging, honey and oranges, the "Florida Cracker Cowboy" , as they are called for the habit of cracking the whip above the cattle's ears to get them out of the thick palmettos, has been an invaluable part of Florida's unique history. The cowboys were a tough lot who had a tough job of getting some mighty tough cattle out of the thick and back onto the trail. Often sleeping beneath the stars and mosquitoes alike. Only to awaken the next morning to do it all over again. During these cattle runs, more often than not, they'd run into some pretty bad storms forcing them to hold their cattle up into these little shelters with pens out back. Now overlooking this old cattle barn on the family property in Immokalee, Fla, a daughter hunts from the same stand Grandpa hunted from for years and years before her daddy hunted from it too. It's her turn now, and just like her heritage of "Florida Cracker Cowboys" in her family before her, she's determined to make it happen. History, I believe, is made by sharing trials, adversities, and triumphs together, by strong families who share together. I wanted to paint some history into my work, somehow blending the past with the present. There's a surprisingly large number of female hunters who every year enjoy hunting with their fathers and husbands, so I said why not paint a female bow hunter?. After all, they can do it too.
