Description
Stereomicroscope photograph of a flower of Herb Robert, Geranium robertianum. The flower has ten anthers in two concentric sets of five. The central anthers mature first and die back exposing the pink stigma. Yellow pollen grains can be seen here germinating on the stigmatic surface and producing pollen tubes. These grow down the style to the ovules which can then be fertilised by the male gametes. The second set of anthers (the orange structures adjacent to the petals) mature and dehisce later. Herb Robert is a common wildflower of shady hedges, woods and walls. Magnification: x5.1 at 35mm size.
