Very beautiful and such an iconic Hawaiian image. That belongs on a postcard at the very least, and would look utterly amazing as a mural in a public space. Great description too! Featured in Hawaiiana. Aloha nui!! L/F

Very pleased with the card

July 18th, 2018

I bought this card for a woman whose husband loved Johnny Cash. He died suddenly a few weeks ago. He had always said that when he died he didn’t want a funeral, that he wanted his friends to gather at a bar and drink a glass of whiskey or something else in his memory while a Johnny Cash song played in the background. And his family honored those wishes. In that vein I wanted to search for a card that was not the usual bereavement card. I had the idea of something related to Johnny Cash and I found this beautiful card with the perfect cover words and illustration. I was able to personalize it with my own words, which were imprinted inside the card. Needless to say, my friend loved the personal nature of the card and how fitting it was to her husband’s interests. The card arrived very quickly and in perfect condition. I am very happy with all aspects of this purchase. Thank you.

Artist's Description

In Hawaii, the flower worn behind the right ear is for someone who is looking for a mate and the flower worn behind the left ear is for someone who is taken. The reason for the distinction is that the heart is closer to the left side, hence your heart is taken if the flower is worn on the left. An easy way to remember is to think of a wedding ring! However if the flower is worn behind both ears : you are married but still available and worn backward behind your ear : you are available immediatly.

About James Temple

James Temple

I have lived in Hawaii for the past 16 years, 1200 feet above sea level, on the small rural island of Moloka'i. It is very quiet here, with only about 7,500 residents, sort of like living in a small town in the middle of the Pacific ocean. I appreciate the quiet life after spending 35 years in the advertising/design/illustration business in Chicago and San Francisco. I have always loved cooking. Eventually that love led me to a degree in the Culinary Arts. Since then I have designed and built a house, worked in restaurants, self-published three cookbooks, and took up photography. Now retired, I spend most of my time developing recipes and photographing them, plus researching and writing about Hawaii's culinary history on my food blog...
