Description
The second largest city in Slovakia, Kosice (pronounced Ko-sich-eh) is home to 240,000 people and lies on the Hornad River near the Hungarian border. It is known these days as the cultural centre of eastern Slovakia and has been named the European Capital of Culture. Slovakia's best kept secret has a vibrant beating heart along its main street. This boulevard is usually filled with bustling crowds of hip Slovakians and the restaurants, cafes and bars are some of the best tin this part of the world. Step outside this this beating heart and you are met with a distinct contrast as you meet the gentrifying inner city suburbs, grungy and grimy with a fantastic appeal. Kosice has earned its place as one of my must-see cities in eastern Europe.
This shot looking up the main street, uses the leading lines of the old gutter system and disused tram tracks to draw your eye to the town hall at the very heart of this streetscape. The clouds really add to the drama and with a high contrast black and white pass over the image and some darkened vignetting, the feel of the image becomes very dramatic and shows off the grungy streetscape.
