Artist's Description
This is a life size sculpture at a church in Virginia a few miles from Quantico. The original image was shot at high noon and has to much contrast and is only good as a snapshot. I took it as if I was a witness to this event, making sure to exclude any modern landmarks. 5 years later, with my idea as seeing this as a witness at the time of death, I added the lighting effects in Photoshop.
About Lawrence Costales
Mostly self taught, I began to seriously study what makes a good photo by studying great paintings. In 1988 I took some black and white photography classes at Mt. SAC collage, CA but I couldn't wait to take the required classes to get to color, so I went off on my own. My first award-winning photo was a military image of a sunset through camouflaged equipment. My latest travel photographs are from my tour of duty in Kuwait in support of the US Army at Camp Doha and Camp Arifjan. During my one year there, 2003/4, I was also able to travel to Italy and Dubai, UAE. Some of my earlier works have been displayed at the ARCO Towers in Los Angeles, US Embassy in Bogota, Colombia, Galleria Nina Moreno, Tijuana, B.C., the Temecula Art Gallery(TAG),...

Lawrence - I saw your name on a link about the National contest FAA is currently running. I appreciated what you had to say! I came to view your work - and the very first image I saw was this one! I appreciate it very much - the lighting is incredible. I also do not change my photos much except for sharpness, some saturation or highlights, and sometimes other minor adjustments. I feel that if I have to change too much, then the original photo is not one that should be shared! I also do not do HDR - I feel it is overdone, and there are enough artists out there who like that! I liked reading that you waited a few years to change this - and do think you did a fabulous job on the adding of lighting - nicely done!
Lawrence Costales replied:
Heather, I'm glad you paid me a visit - thank you for taking the time to comment

Just began to look over your pieces, but this was so compelling I just have to start with commenting on this very soul-searching piece, Lawrence. Looks as if you did this in various programs, so just want to say keep up your inspiring work. And also thank you for a nice comment you left on one of mine, David
Lawrence Costales replied:
All work was done in Photoshop. The image was taken with my Mamiya 645 medium format camera. I was compelled to finish my image this way three years later when I revisited the photo and I kept seeing the finished work in my mind. Up to this time about 99% of my images were straight photography. Even after I received a certificate in multimedia in 2006, my work is still about 85% straight photography. To many people take lousy images and then add effects or over saturation to cover their short falls. My personal goal is every one of my manipulated images has to have a solid, well compose image as it's base. I was going to start doing HDR images a couple of years ago but many people are overdoing it. I have only done one HDR image so far. I'm glad you have take the time to see some of my work and I appreciate you comments.

Love this work! the purple color is perfect for the mood...very impressive!
Lawrence Costales replied:
Purple is a royal color and is used here as God calling his son back. The angle was as if I were a witness on that day and the darkness was as it was from Noon until his death three hours later. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
