Description
The piazza and Basilica of St Maria Maggiore were two short block from our bed and breakfast in Rome so we walked by this lovely church and plaza and fountain daily. One early morning I photographed the fountain located in the piazza before too many people crowded the piazza. Soon after I began photographing however, a man arrived to start washing himself in the fountain! All the fountains in Rome have clean drinkable water. The Fontan di Piazza S. Maria Maggiore (or Fountain of Saint Mary Major) is at the foot of a colossal fluted column with a Corinthian capital. The column , which is only seen in the photo in the upper left side, is called the Colonna della Pace or Column of Peace. It was erected by Paul V in 1614. It is made of Himmetian marble and is 14.3 m high. The fountain below was built in 1615 by Carlo Maderno, and consisted of an oblong pond with a circular basin rising from its center on a baluster. The eagles decorating the pond are the heraldic coat of arms of Paul V Borghese, who also commissioned this work, while the dragons that once decorated the long sides of the pond, another coat of arms of the Borghese family, have long gone. The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, located opposite this fountain and column, is the larges Roman Catholic Marian church in Rome and is owned by the Vatican. So although it is located in Italian territory it enjoys extraterritorial status.
