Fred was born in a farmhouse in Franklin County, Pennsylvania on March 5, 1902, the second of three children. His heritage was English, Dutch, Swiss and German.
Early on, Bear worked as a glue maker for the Chrysler Company in Detroit. In an interview, he mentioned operating a plant from 1929 to 1933, during the Great Depression, that caught fire, thus rendering him unemployed.[3] With a partner named Chuck who had worked at the same plant, they put together $1,200 to open his bow business in a garage. Bear Archery Company was thus founded in 1933.
