On a nice autumn day, it was mesmerizing to stand atop Castle Hill in Budapest, Hungary. Watching the boats go up and down the Danube River...watching the flow of traffic on and off the Chain Bridge....watching the intricate dance of traffic merging into the roundabout....and watching the little funicular go up and down from Adam Clark Square at the river level to the top of Castle HIll. The funicular was opened on March 2, 1870, was destroyed in the Second World War and reopened on June 4, 1986. Even older is the Sz�chenyi Chain Bridge, which crossed the River Danube between Buda and Pest, the western and eastern sides of Budapest, the capital of Hungary. It was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Hungary, and was opened in 1849. On the far side of the river (the Pest side) you can see the steeples of St Stephens Cathedral.
