Description
The Asero rubra, commonly known as the anemone stinkhorn, sea anemone fungus and starfish fungus, is common here in Hawaii, but looks like a creature from outer space. Asero rubra translates to "disgusting red". It's called a Stinkhorn because it emits a foul smelling olive-brown slime all over its top that carries its spores. The slime smells of feces or rotted meat. Flies and other insects are attracted to the smell and get the Stinkhorn slime all over their little feet and fly or crawl away to disperse the spores. The first native Australian fungus to be formally described, Aseroe rubra was collected in 1800 in southern Tasmania. Apparently they are not poisonous because the Chinese have been eating this strange looking fungi for a 1000 years.

Unbelievable! What a disgusting creation! Hard to imagine how anyone could want to eat this! Only on a dare?

This is a strange looking mushroom! Great pic! And, yes, that's what I thought, it looks like chocolate. No, I wouldn't try it, either.
James Temple replied:
Very strange Alina, imagine my surprise when I saw it growing in a pile of wood chips. It took me a while online finding out what it was. Thanks for visiting!

James Temple replied:
Well you're right, it does look like chocolate sauce, but even chocolate sauce wouldn't make me eat this "Funky Fungi". Thanks for the comment!
