Description
“I wander’d by the brookside,
I wander’d by the mill;
I could not hear the brook flow,—
The noisy wheel was still;
There was no burr of grasshopper,
No chirp of any bird,
But the beating of my own heart
Was all the sound I heard.”
--Richard Monckton Milnes (1809–1885)
Old Furnace Place Grist Mill and Waterwheel are reminders of bygone days in Cherokee County, South Carolina. The old mill fell victim to arson years ago, but the waterwheel still remains along with the old rock dam. In earlier days, visitors could stop by for a cool drink of spring water flowing from a pipe which crossed the creek. Furnace Place, abandoned for awhile, was donated to the county for preservation as a local historic site. It is located on Mill Gin Road off South Carolina Scenic Highway 11 not far from Cowpens National Battlefield.
