Description
George Fownes (1815-1849), British chemist. Fownes studied chemistry at Middlesex Hospital, then at Giessen in Germany. He lectured and worked at hospitals and universities in London. By 1845, he held the chair of chemistry at the Pharmaceutical Society and succeeded Everitt at Middlesex Hospital. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1845, and was awarded its Royal Medal in 1847 for his organic chemistry research. However, he was diagnosed with a pulmonary disease. He visited Barbados in 1847 to attempt a cure, but on returning to England in late 1848 caught a cold and died a few months later at the age of just 33.
