A shipment of crated Sea Gladiators, bound for Egypt, was diverted to Malta in 1940 and largely ignored until the aerial attacks began on the island. Six of the crated aircraft were rebuilt and brought into service, acting as the mainstay of aerial; defence of Malta against the SM79s and CR42s of the Italia air force. Two were lost in accidents and one was retained for spares leaving the legendary three, Faith, Hope and Charity to protect the island. Only Faith survived and some of the airframe is preserved in the museum in Malta. The image shows a typical engagement with the Gladiator poised to attack from height as the SM79s and escorting CR42s near the island.
