It was early morning in August in my Ohio garden. The sun was still climbing and the world was still. Even early in the day, I could tell it was going to be a hot one. "Better get the sprinkler going soon," I thought. But as soon as that thought entered my mind, this vision entered my eyes and I immediately forgot about my garden chores. I hurried inside and grabbed my camera. It is always better to listen to the world than to listen to my list of chores!

The oil from the plant is known to enhance blood circulation to the scalp and in turn promote healthy hair growth.
Egyptians used hibiscus tea to lower body temperature, treat heart and nerve diseases, and as a diuretic to increase urine production. In Africa, tea was used to treat constipation, cancer, liver disease, and cold symptoms.
As wonderful as it seems for humans though, a word of caution from The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals specifically lists the hardy hibiscus, Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus), as toxic to your canine companions if ingested. The flowers are considered generally safe for humans to eat and the health benefits of hibiscus tea seem to be numerous!
Hibiscus is a genus of flowering plants in the mallow family, Malvaceae. The genus is quite large, comprising several hundred species. They are really beautiful flowers that attract bees and butterflies which make them near and dear to my heart!
