Description
Gold is a big deal in human society – presumably, the value of an item depends upon its scarcity, which is one reason why plastic milk jugs are not accorded a tremendous amount of respect and awe.
But if one could be transported back 500 years, what then? No doubt the value of the plastic milk jug would be seen, but would it also be determined to be beautiful? Is this our sole standard for beauty – that something be rare, and therefore expensive, and from there, declared to be precious?
Such is the way mankind’s thoughts, or at least those of mankind who are bent upon making money and a lot of it, runs. But in reality, the truly beautiful things, the amazing things, the wondrous things that have an intrinsic value, are not necessarily rare. And because they are all around us, all of us are able to share in their beauty and preciousness, if we only open our eyes to do so.
Take babies, for example. There are a lot of babies in the world, and truly lost is the person who cannot see the intrinsic value in their smile, their innocence, their perfect skin, their need to be loved, their hope for the next generation to continue. Babies bring out the best in humans who are still open to be kind, thoughtful, protective, and wise.
Or, take sunshine – the golden orb that shines over all of us, giving us light and warmth and the ability to grow plants to feed us and our animal friends on this planet. Gold Leaf, the artwork, celebrates this beautiful, precious, valuable, incredible resource that is there for us all – not to be hoarded away, or given the idea that it is rare because its mining is limited, like diamonds, but freely given by the Creator who made the world.
Gold Leaf encourages us to enter into this meadow, to feel the breeze on our face, and to be thankful for the truly valuable gifts and resources that are there – or are supposed to be there – for all God’s creatures.
