Although these are said to be good to eat, I NEVER! eat wild mushrooms. It is too hard to be certain of an ID if you are not an expert, and eating the wrong mushroom can make you very ill or even kill you.
Boletes are kind of stocky mushrooms that do not have gills. Their underside is spongy with tubes that release the spores. We have a number of types of boletes in our hardwood forest - some are amazingly small and I've seen some as large as 8 inches in diameter.
This picture was taken August 20, 2011, in Green Lane, Pennsylvania, USA.

I always wanted to try photography, and my retirement offered an opportunity to do just that. The natural world is my first love. Here you will find pictures of things both large (landscapes, for instance) and small (macro) that catch my eye. I hope the images serve as a window into the natural world many of you don't have the chance to see. In a sense, I'm trying to create a guided nature trail, sharing what information I have about the subject. I'm always grateful for new and better information and welcome all input. Learning is food for the mind and soul. Nothing is ever harmed in the picture-taking process, but some things that wander into our home (like spiders) are carefully removed from the house after they serve as "models"....

Wonderful image and gallery, I had no idea there were so many variations on the Mushroom or Fungus, l/f. Thanks for the lesson!
Carol Senske replied:
Hi, Steve, in 2015 we had all kinds of mushrooms all over the place. Every day seemed to serve up something unseen before. Since then the mushrooms are hardly to be found. Strange. Thanks for your nice comment - I love having visitors:>) Enjoy your week ahead!

A very beautiful closeup capture, MN! This composition reminds me of a pencil study I did a long time ago. L&F (I should look through my archived artworks.)
