Great Blue Heron. Ardea herodias.
This shot kind of makes me laugh, because a person could wonder of this bird was so strong he actually destroyed that boulder! Maybe he did some super crazy thing that cracked that rock to pieces and then just casually strolled away . . . kind of like a Steve Urkle, "Did I do that?" But if he didn't do it, then who did?? What in the world made that huge thing split apart?
Sometimes I wonder what I leave behind me as I walk through this world. Do I leave things broken and in pieces? Do I leave things better or worse? I hope I am a good influence on the world, but sometimes I do question. I hope our broken world can somehow be bound back together and all these cracks between us be healed!
Living by protected wetlands has many advantages and a few disadvantages. Sometimes coyote, snakes, skunks and mink in the backyard are cause for concern for my little dog, but the benefits outweigh those worries. The lakes and wetlands behind us are home to so many wonderful creatures. Many times while I am out walking my pup, I will see such beauty and will hurry home, grab my camera and hope it will still be there when I run back.
On this day, I was lucky this Heron had not moved far. In fact, at one point I chuckled to myself, that the bird and I were both standing so still waiting for our prey to make a move. I wanted to get an action shot, while he was trying to grab lunch! They famously wade slowly or stand statue-like, stalking fish and other prey in shallow water or open fields. Then with lightning-fast thrust of the neck and head they stab with their strong bills. Their very slow wing beats, tucked-in neck and trailing legs create an unmistakable image in flight.
The great blue heron is a large wading bird in the heron family Ardeidae, common near the shores of open water and in wetlands over most of North America and Central America, as well as the Caribbean and the Galápagos Islands. Luckily, this one seems to call Columbus, Ohio home!
Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
