"Grignan Village in Provence" by Mona Edulesco.
Original watercolor painting on a high quality 300 g/m - 140lb Acid Free Arches watercolor paper 20x20 cm.
This is a painting that I made on the spot while visiting the fortified village of Grignan and its castle, in Drome Provencale, France.

Last weekend I visited the charming village of Grignan in Drome Provencale, its castle and the lavender fields around. Long time since I am in love with the magic of Provence and everything inspires me over there...whether it is an enchanting village, a glorious field of sunflowers or lavender, or a charming market...
---------------------------
Grignan is a charming medieval village of the Drome Provencale, near the "enclave des papes" and the wine route. Grignan is a hillside fortified village clustered tightly around a large Renaissance castle that dominated the top of the hill. It was made famous in France by the Aristocratic Madame de Sévigné, remembered for the many letters she wrote in the 17th century.
From far off, the village of Grignan looks superb, standing proudly on the plain, sheltered behind its great high walls. Upon your arrival you will be overcome by the picture perfect scene that Grignan presents, highlighted by the shimmering colours of the light stone. The beautiful surrounding landscapes comprise prairies and scrubland, holm oaks and lavender, broom and shrubs all alternating with parcels of grapevines and truffle fields.
