Visiting Cologne, Germany at the Gross St. Martin Basilica. The Great Saint Martin Church is a Romanesque Catholic church. Its foundations rest on remnants of a Roman chapel, on an island in the Rhine. The church was transformed later into a Benedictine monastery. A soaring crossing tower is the landmark of Cologne's Old Town. The tower was erected between 1150-1250. The church was badly damaged in World War II. Restoration work completed in 1985. As of 2009, Great Saint Martin open for visits again. In addition, 1965 provided interesting discoveries. At a depth two meters under the Church floor, a variety of medieval and modern burials were found.
Most of the old town was destroyed in World War II. These were about the only older medieval buildings that were not destroyed.

Is this a fantasy from fairyland? What a photograph! Unusual and well done. I love architecture and architectural abstracts, also. The houses in front almost look like fake cardboard sets for a movie....
Joan Minchak replied:
Sort of, thank you, Lenore. I was walking from the Rhine River upwards and took the shot before entering the city.
Russell Styles
