Description
Hadrian's Wall in winter. Image 1 of 2. The snowy scenery of Northumberland National Park, England, is lit by the afternoon sunlight as Hadrian's Wall recedes into the distance (upper left). This view looks eastward from Cuddy's Crag, near Housesteads Roman Fort. This central part of the wall is built on part of the Whin Sill, a protruding mass of rock that is casting deep shadows to the left. The 125-kilometre-long Whin Sill is a natural barrier across the northern part of England. In 122 AD the Roman Emperor Hadrian ordered the building of this 118-kilometre-long wall to defend Roman Britain from the Picts to the north. For this scene in summer, see image E755/020.
