A hawk perched on a fence post surveys the prairie beyond, watching intently for any sign of rodent life. This scene is in the Oglala National Grassland and along the gravel road that leads out to Toadstool Geologic Park in northwestern Nebraska. The steep sides of the road reveal the layers of siltstone and clay typical of the area. The fence doubtless discourages the antelope from crossing the road.
