Description
The Houston monument to Dick Dowling, member of the Jefferson Davis Guards, a Confederate unit raised in Houston Texas during the American Civil War that was active throughout the Texas coast from the Rio Grande to the Louisiana border, and was best known for its action at the Battle of Sabine Pass. Dowling was a Lt. in the Guards and died of Yellow Fever in 1867. The monument has been moved several times and currently stands in Hermann Park. Created by Frank A Teich, it was the first publically financed monument in the city of Houston.
