Historic Bridge Street Pier Sunrise by HH Photography of Florida.
In 1921, a wooden bridge was built connecting the mainland and the fishing village of Cortez, FL, to the island and what was then called Cortez Beach. Prior to that year, access to the island was only by boat. Cortez Beach became the center of activity on the island and in the late 1920's, the name of this island community was changed to Bradenton Beach.
In 1967 the original wooden bridge was replaced by a new, state of the art, concrete drawbridge, thus ending the use of the old wooden structure. The Cortez side of the old bridge was removed but the Bradenton Beach side was saved and transformed into a fishing pier. A restaurant was eventually added to the west end of the pier and this historic area continues to be a gathering place for locals and tourists alike.
