Set against a gray-blue autumn sky, golden fields are freshly harvested. Life in the country moves at a steady, peaceful pace.
Or it should – because the seasons and the stars in the sky move in their regular, stately way, and living in the country, one can actually SEE the stars, and the evidence of the seasons is not obliterated by cement and concrete, steel and car exhaust.
But inside each country home there is an item that one finds in every city home – the television, and now there is the Smart phone that everyone carries around, and through these devices, the artificiality of the urban world enters into the lives of everyone, everywhere.
Instead of walking through the tall, golden grass, listening to the silence of the landscape and marveling at the deep blue of the sky, country folks join their city brethren in absorbing themselves in “reality” shows, following the “news” and ingesting within all the anxiety it produces, spending countless hours flipping through mindless YouTube videos and lowering our collective sense of intellect and humor.
Homeland 2, the artwork, is a reminder to us that there is a world out there – a real world – that is not dependent upon the fantasies of screen writers and public relations experts and advertisers. This is a world where spring follows winter, and summer follows spring, autumn follows summer, and winter returns to close the seasonal dance. It is a world where animals live their lives in burrows and nests and migrating through the grasses, a world that has nothing to do with politics, finance, or religion.
It is a world where a day’s work can be enough, and in the evening, it is time to sit on the porch with family and loved ones, and simply be together. Even in the city, this last element is possible (maybe not with the porch), but city or country, to enjoy the beauty of our Homeland, it’s much easier to do so with the television off, the slick magazines put away, and the phones out of hearing distance.
Homeland 2 has companion pieces on this site – Homeland 1 and Homeland 3.
