Hood's Texans
John Bell Hood leads the Texas Brigade Forward
Battle of Gettysburg
July 2, 1863
General John Bell Hood's hard fighting Texas Brigade as they begin their assault toward Devil's Den and the Round Tops on July 2nd, 1863. Shown in this painting is General Hood at the head of the First Texas Regiment. The only regiment in the brigade to carry a Texas flag at Gettysburg (against CS Army regulations). The flag was made from the wedding dress of the wife of Texas Senator Louis T. Wigfall and was edged in black crape to memorialize the men of the 1st Texas who were lost in the brutal fighting at the Cornfield during the battle of Antietam Creek Maryland in September of 1862. Also shown in the painting is Colonel Philip P. Work of the 1st Texas and Brigadier General Jerome B. Robertson.
