Hurricane Katrina (yellow and red) over the Gulf of Mexico (upper centre) in August 2005. This image, based on satellite data, shows the intensity of rainfall ranging from light blue (lightest), through green and yellow to red (heaviest). Katrina first made landfall near Miami, Florida on 24th August as a category 1 hurricane. It then moved south into the Gulf of Mexico where it intensified to a category 5 storm. It made landfall in Louisiana on 29th August, as a category 4 storm with sustained winds of 240 Kilometres per hour. Katrina was the costliest hurricane ever and caused over 1800 fatalities.
