Description
Illuminated manuscript. Illuminated manuscript page of money being paid. The bags are being put into a secure chest whilst a scribe (at bottom left) notes the amount paid. During the middle ages, book illumination with hand-drawn images was considered a high art, with gold leaf being used with paints of animal, plant or mineral origins. The images also helped to describe events to the illiterate. During the middle ages, merchant families stored valuables, lent money & arranged the transfer of funds. Image of the Turkish Sultan Bajazet receiving a payment for the release of the captive John de Nevers after the 1396 battle of Nicopolis. Photographed from an 1844 book.
