Wild Irises growing near the village of Auribeau in the Luberon mountains in southern France. Painting in Provence and Luberon was highly exciting given the unique light there and also the abundance of subject material. I painted these flowers for Vincent on a warm late autumn day. It grew naturally at high altitude and the first flowers to appear, signaling the arrival of spring. Since van Gogh painted these flowers, they have taken on a quality which transcends their physical beauty. When growing wild in the mountains such as these, they can survive under extreme conditions and this is what I wanted to capture, their ability to withstand the forces of nature through an entire cycle of the equinoxes and appear as radiant as this.
