This painting was inspired by my wife's many episodes of making coconut oil. Its lots of work grinding the coconut especially without an electric grinder. Usually its my job to grind the coconut while she renders the oil out of the meat. To the experienced, this is a highly romanticized depiction of grinding coconut. Its more strenuous and time consuming than it looks. I think I painted it this way to tease the notion that island life is so EASY!

I incarnated on Earth in the early 80s on the island of Saipan. Then went to finish my formal education in the Pacific Northwest of U.S. Worked many full-time jobs and then landed at a shellfish farm, and now teach English literature to high school students in Saipan. Awesome life so far, many contrasts, many lessons. Creating visual art is a form of meditation and communication. I have a lot of memories. A lot of connections. All of which is happening constantly within. The images that you see is a representation of that realm as I perceive it in my minds eye. The issues I try and work out. The arguments I claim to win.
