King Tut was part of the Winchester Exhibition in Cape Town, South Africa. The artist has done renditions of Egyptian art that was so influential for the Art Deco period. The World of the 1920’s and 30’s Went Wild for King Tut. The discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 sparked a global frenzy for ancient Egypt.
While the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun is well known, the story of what happened afterwards, when the world went wild for anything to do with “King Tut”, is less explored.
That Carter’s discovery altered life in the Twenties and Thirties is not in question. A craze for Egyptian exoticism convulsed the West, infiltrating both high and low culture across the fields of music, fine art, fashion, film and furniture design.
