Description
"Le Baiser de l'Hotel de Ville" An iconic photograph by Robert Doisneau (1950) recreated as a colour painting by Andy Lloyd, September 2015, 14" x 10" acrylic on canvas.
I originally painted this famous scene in 2006. This month, I received an email requesting use of the image of the painting in a film about Robert Doisneau, that was being produced by his family for the French TV channel Arte. Hie grand-daughter, Clementine Deroudille, wants to show several variations of the image to show it's status as "a cliche all around the world". As I sold the original 2006 painting some years ago, I decided to recreate the painting this week, so I could provide Robert Doisneau's family with a high definition image ot the work. I'm very proud to be involved in this project. As far as I know, my paintings are the only attempts to create colour versions of the classic black and white photograph.

thanks Ira. I love the people-watching element of his iconic image. A thing I greatly miss in our current bleaker times.

I have always been a big Doisneau fan. I read that some of his candid shots were not always so candid. Sometimes he used "spontaneous" models. He did have a commercial background; and was a very hard working professional. Whatever the circumstances he created some of the most iconic images coming out of France after the war. Great job.

Very good that you included the story here...otherwise I wouldn't know what to think about this famous picture....
Andy Lloyd replied:
Quite so, i don't know if it ever did make the cut for the film about Doisneau. Nothing on wikipedia about it. He led a good life, tinged at the end with great sadness
