Description
This detailed nature print is from an original acrylic painting by artist Susan A. Walton, who often uses natural elements in symbolic ways, and also includes from time to time references to history in her work. In this case the painting is inspired by the Biblical phrase, "This is the day the Lord hath made, let us rejoice and be glad in it," and features a mated pair of ruby-throated hummingbirds dancing about brilliant red buckeye blossoms set before a backdrop of blast-fractured rock the artist observed at the site of an old mill run in Missouri. Perhaps the artist was alluding to loving relationships that endure, blossom and even grow more intense and beautiful through setback and sorrow. What do you think?
From fractured rock springs life, and even its rough face sports the colors of a new day dawning. Oak, a symbol of strength, cedar a symbol of endurance, arrowroot perhaps a hint at Cupid's darts? The red buckeye was once used to catch that which was elusive and unreachable. A sprig of bedstraw, a sweet scented herb once used to stuff mattresses in years gone by, suggests young love; a leaf of a wood violet for purity of heart allows light to transmit through it honestly. There's evergreen fern for all-important forgiveness, and moss which was once used to protect and heal all wounds, softens the broken stone.
