Description
An eastern bluebird pauses on the thin branch of a wahoo, a small shrub of the eastern woodlands of the United States noted for its hot pink seed pods containing fiery red, pulpy seeds. Wahoo is an American Indian word; it is also called eastern burning bush for its red fall color and is related to the common landscaping plant of which most people are familiar. In this neck of the woods bluebirds nest in May and once, when saying a prayer in the field near the studio after the loss that day at the last weekend of May of someone dear to me, a bluebird brushed past me, literally touching me as it flew into a nest box that up until then had never been used, but which had been put up years before by the very person I'd just lost. It entered the nest and I heard its three young chicks chirping a famished greeting, much to my surprise. In all the tumult of that month no one realized the family of birds had even taken residence. When Memorial Day came the bluebird chicks took their first tentative flight from that box and the day was filled birdsong. For that reason they remind me of Memorial Day.
