Description
Some of South America's most surreal scenery can be found in southwest Bolivia, an area of high altitude desert, volcanoes and mineral lakes. Licancabur volcano (5915m / 19,405ft) sits on the Chile - Bolivia border (the desert in the distance is the Atacama Desert in northern Chile). Laguna Verde's vivid turquoise / green colour varies throughout the day depending on the light and conditions and is said to be caused by high concentrations of arsenic in the water. The lake on the left of the image is Laguna Blanca, a saline lake which is a good place to observe flamingos. This part of Bolivia is within the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve (Reserva Nacional de Fauna Andina Eduardo Abaroa in Spanish, often referred to locally by its Spanish acronym REA).

Thank you Heidi! Bolivia's well worth a visit, fascinating country if a bit of a madhouse at times, with plenty of culture and amazing landscapes!
