Another alley in Locke, California Chinatown. This alley looks toward the Sacramento River and levee. On an enlarged version of this picture, you can see the partial words Boat House on a building in the distance.
The Chinatown of Locke, California was built by Chinese immigrants in 1912 and, for a while, was the largest Chinatown outside of China. When the nearby town of Walnut Grove burned to the ground due to an accidental fire, immigrants settled in Locke.
Locke was known for its saloons, houses of ill-repute, gambling, opium and other activities of reputation. Today, it is a thriving area artists and includes the famous Al the Wops restaurant.
