Description
The historic Longfellow's Wayside Inn Grist Mill is located in Sudbury, MA. It was the first working mill built as a museum.
It was commissioned by Henry Ford (yes THAT Henry Ford) and designed by renowned hydraulic engineer J.B. Campbell of Philadelphia. Work on the mill began in 1924 by local workmen preparing the waterway from Grist Mill Pond, and was built in the style of mills that operated in the Delaware Valley of Pennsylvania and in the Midlands area of England. The mill operates with millstones imported from France and high-quality 18th century milling machinery purchased by Ford's antiques buyers. It opened on Thanksgiving Day in 1929 as an extension to the historic Wayside Inn. It's most notable clients were Pepperidge Farm and the King Arthur Flour Company, from 1967 to 1969.
It is currently a working mill which produces tons of flour per year that is used in the Wayside Inn's restaurant baked goods and is sold in the Inn Gift Shop.
