Description
This piece was done in the Plein Air Arts Festival 2010 in Denver, CO. I was in a parking lot close to 13th Street looking north on a VERY hot day. I was slightly captivated by this section in Denver where you can clearly see very old buildings, such as the plant with the smokestack in the middle of composition, juxtaposed with modern architecture such as the one that many locals fondly refer to as the Cash Register Building. Some locals refer to it at the Mailbox Building. It is actually the Wells Fargo Building, and it was designed by architect Philip Johnson. Work on the building was completed in 1983.
It took me 3 separate trips to complete this piece, and for a brief period of time on one of those days there was a wispy heart-shaped cloud which I could not resist incorporating into the painting. This work turned out to be a real study for me in line, shape, color, highlights and shadows. The abstract colors at the bottom of the canvas represent the hustle and bustle of the city streets and sidewalks.
