Description
If it's too nice a day in Madrid to be indoors at an art museum, just go to Plaza Mayor for a look at the architecture. The Plaza Mayor was built during the Habsburg period and is a central plaza in the city. It is located only a few blocks away from another famous plaza, the Puerta del Sol. The Plaza Mayor is large square measuring 129 m 94 m (423 ft 308 ft) and surrounded by three-story residential buildings having 237 breathtaking balconies facing the Plaza. The most prominent building on the Plaza Mayor (shown here) is the Casa de la Panaderia, the seat of the powerful baker's guild. It was completed as early as 1590, before the square was even laid out. The colorful allegoric murals were only added recently, in 1992. Afterwards take a seat in one of the outdoor cafes around the square and watch the day go by.
