Description
This painting is a part of my series "Goddess' a tribute to the women past and present known and unknown who have shown the strength and focused purpose to do small things, bigs things insignificant daily chores too as part of a job and shine and show character that impacts one and all. Mai Bhago was born at the village of Jhabal Kalan in present day Amritsar, Punjab. Her blood boiled at the timidity of 40 sikh deserters, she was distressed to hear in 1705 that some of the Sikhs of her village neighborhood who had gone to Anandpur Sahib to fight for Guru Gobind Singh Ji (against the Mughal army) had deserted him under adverse conditions.Through a subtle mix of taunting insults, and hardcore professional wrestling-style pump-up speeches, Mai Bhago made these sikh deserters realize that they had a job to do, and they just needed to get out there and do it. She killed several enemy soldiers on the battlefield, and is considered to be a 'saint warrior' by the Sikhs for over 300 years. She was the sole survivor of the battle of Muktsar (fought on 29 December 1705) and thereafter joined the service of her Guru as one of his bodyguards. you can read more about her here:http://www.sikhchannel.tv/sikh-history-mai-bhago-ji/
