This bald eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, sat majestically on the top branch of a dead cottonwood tree near the Colorado River in Fruita, Mesa County, Colorado. There were five other bald eagles flying around in the area playing in the sky; chasing each other, dancing and courting. This one just watched the others and posed for this portrait.
The bald eagle, also known as the American Eagle, is very common in Alaska. However, their numbers are growing in the lower forty-eight states. Their numbers were seriously diminished because of shooting, pesticides and human encroachment. Intense recovery programs by federal and state wildlife agencies appear to be very succesful and the number of bald eagles is increasing.
The bald eagle likes to nest in the tallest trees close the top of the tree. They feed mostly on fish and can be found near lakes, streams and rivers. They grab the fish in their talons as they swoop down from their perch or from their soaring spot in the sky.
The term bald comes from an old english expression that means "white headed", thus the bald eagle.
