Description
Malayan Tiger Portrait by Penny Birch-Williams. I observed a pair of Malayan tigers at the zoo in Tampa for quite some time. One tiger was actively pacing and wandering the habitat, while the other lay in the cave-like alcove. The pacing tiger kept approaching the resting tiger and was warned away each time by growls, bared teeth, and a few angry swats. I had a good view of the resting tiger as it faced out from the alcove. The intense and challenging expression on this tiger's portrait was aimed at the other tiger, not me (thank goodness!) but was a very interesting inspiration, framed by the gray rock walls of its alcove. Sadly the Malayan tiger is an endangered species due to loss of habitat and poaching. The people of Malaysia, to their credit, do try to protect the tiger, which is a cultural icon.
