Description
I had a wonderful opportunity to photograph a hummingbird nest in a friend's yard. It was waist high and completely accessible, allowing me to get in close. Hummer nests are rarely that easy to photograph. I spent 5 days there from the hours of 10am till about 1pm, when the shade moved in. Mama was more than aware of my presence, I tried to be respectful of their space, but when she flew off I couldn't help but sneak a few close up shots of the two babies. They stay in the nest about 21 days. I was there the week they changed from just heads and necks into curious little creatures wanting to explore their surroundings. I photographed them as they began to maneuver around the nest, one eventually worked his way onto the nest's rim. Being a little too adventurous he soon learned what gravity is. He ventured too far out of the nest and fell to the ground. I was thrilled to be there to save the day, I put the little guy back in his home. Neither hummer left the nest again till they fledged, and Mama wasn't so annoyed by me anymore. :-)

Thank you Shirley. I was so fortunate to have had such a rare opportunity to photograph an extremely accessible nest in a friend's yard that I was able to hang out in as much as I wanted. The nests are never in such an open and approachable location. It was an experience I will always remember.
