Hi Dan, I promised to get back to you this evening (though it's late). Thanks so much for responding to my "Reclining Figure." Its process started in a technique that's a favorite of mine, namely automatism. I begin simply by piling up textures of marks, lines, and random values, substracting some, and then rebuilding once more, again and again. At some point, I may see in the "chaos" some hint of a partial or full figure. If it seems the figure is "worth pursuing," I then proceed to emphasize the figure in some way(s). In "Reclining Figure," I emphasized the earth-mother-like figure by simplifying and darkening the space around her. Some of my favorite features of her include: her small head, her emotional ambiguity, and her enormous thighs. I use automatism from time to time. In the beginning of my career, I used the process quite often even though it doesn't seem to serve me quite so easily nowadays. In general, I have a wide range of expression from purely abstract to very realistic. I admire your courage in attempting so many things artistically speaking. I think that your prodigious expression is wonderful! Of your pieces, the ones that moved me the most were: Reflections II, Reflections I, Pods, Jacqueline, Mary, Greenwich Gypsy, and The Adolescent. I'm seriously contemplating buying a giclee print of Mary when I get some extra money. Finally Dan, I think you from time to time just have flashes of pure brilliance!!! - Mary is an example of that.
