Haunting portrait by Irish artist Sir John Lavery (1856-1941) of a beautiful young woman dressed in what appears to be a mourning outfit. The subject's sorrowful gaze, and the economy with which that image has been rendered, with a subtle flash of white of a feather across the brim of her hat, helping draw attention to her pale red lips and the distant gaze in her blue eyes, is masterful, certainly warranting comparison with his better-known contemporary, John Singer-Sargent.
