Description
Spring Planting
Aquarius/Pisces January 20-March 20
Ecclesiastes 3:1
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.”
These calendar pieces illustrate late 14th century medieval life during seasonal changes, fall harvesting, winter planting, winter hunting, spring planting, May courting, and summer sheep shearing. The “angel of death with winged horses” depicted in the center of the arc reminded medieval Christians to be watchful; every day of their lives were numbered. King Solomon and his affirmation of trust in God from Ecclesiastes 3:1 represents the dominion of the Holy Spirit over matters of life and death. The medieval calendar as an archetype depicts the passage of time through zodiac symbols, though they were not icons of religious beliefs.
