This was photographed at the Cloisters Museum in upper Manhattan, New York. The Cloisters, at the northern tip of Manhattan, is affiliated with the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The buildings which form the Cloisters were medieval structures from various parts of Europe which were brought in pieces and reassembled here to form the museum complex. Colored glass has been popular for centuries for use in windows and household items such as drinking glasses. The earliest forms of colored glass were caused by impurities in the sand used to produce the glass. Later, colors were introduced deliberately into glass by addition of minerals or metals during the production process.
