Description
Met Office commendation. This is the letter of commendation sent to the Special Long-Range Forecast Unit that worked as part of the Met Office during the Second World War (1939-1945). This unit was established in 1942, at the Met Office's site in Dunstable, UK. During the war, the Met Office was codenamed ETA, and in 1944 it made contributions to the preparations for the D-Day invasions of Normandy, France. This letter was sent on the day that invasion was launched (6 June 1944). The signature is that of British meteorologist Ernest George Bilham. For an image of the members of the unit itself, see C011/4714.
